Sarah and I had paddled across to the island on Island Pond that evening. As we made our way back, we hugged the shoreline, letting the quiet evening set the pace.
Then we noticed a loon.
It wasn’t feeding or diving.
It was calling.
Again…
and again…

A few moments later another call echoed from somewhere across the lake.
We stopped paddling.
Then, from across Island Pond, another loon appeared.

We often think of wildlife photography as capturing dramatic moments—an eagle catching a fish or a bear crossing a stream.
Sometimes the story is quieter.
Sometimes it’s simply waiting long enough to watch one voice answered by another.
