Hazen’s Notch Snowmobile Club 500’ Radar Run — Lowell, Vermont

The Hazen’s Notch Snowmobile Club brought racers, volunteers, families, and spectators together in Lowell, Vermont, for its 500-foot Radar Run. From youth classes to high-speed runs, the event offered a full day of snowmobile racing while showcasing the people and volunteers who help keep winter traditions like this going in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.

Snowmobile Racing in Lowell, Vermont

A radar run puts the focus on speed, giving riders a straight 500-foot course to put their machines—and themselves—to the test. But the day in Lowell was about more than simply seeing who could go the fastest. With youth classes alongside the higher-speed runs, racers of different ages had their opportunity on the course while families and spectators gathered to watch.

Events like the Hazen’s Notch Snowmobile Club Radar Run are also part of a larger snowmobile culture across northern Vermont. From a 500-foot run in Lowell to cross-country snowmobile racing on Lake Seymour, winter racing brings together competition, community, and a pastime that remains closely connected to life in the Northeast Kingdom.

For me, the day offered plenty to photograph beyond the machines themselves. This gallery includes more than 180 photographs covering action on the course, behind-the-scenes moments, and some of the people who helped make the event possible. I was grateful for the opportunity to tag along and document not only the racing, but also the atmosphere and community surrounding it.
