ISLAND POND, VERMONT — Island Pond gathered on Memorial Day to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States, continuing a community tradition of remembrance in the heart of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.
Members of American Legion Brighton Post 80 and the American Legion Brighton Post 80 Auxiliary helped organize and lead the Island Pond Memorial Day parade and ceremony. The observance included the parade, wreath placements, and a community ceremony honoring fallen members of the armed forces.
This year’s observance was especially fitting because it was held on May 30, the traditional date on which Memorial Day was observed for many years.
In a small community like Island Pond, Memorial Day carries a particularly personal feeling. Neighbors gather along familiar streets, local veterans and organizations take part in the observance, and the community pauses together to remember lives given in service to the nation.
The size of a town does not determine the significance of its remembrance. Island Pond’s Memorial Day observance was a reminder that gratitude is expressed through the willingness of a community to stop, remember, and pass that memory to another generation.
